The work continues!!!! This summer the goal is to finish all the small jobs around (and some big ones!) loads of little details to touch up so we can starte September 100% !!! Finally!!!! Yes... Oasis has been operational for a year, we have seen over 150 animals pass by and we have done over 500 free sterilizations in our own surgery room! Now, it's time to finish painting walls and floors, fixing wooden gates, working on our trees, and finishing the isolation area for behavior dogs. These are some of the little jobs we are currently doing: - finishing and painting the rest of the perimetral wall (we still have to work all the wall on the outside for humidity and erosion - over 120m!) - redoing the tiling on the pens (we got tired of concrete and tiles are much easier to clean! such a win!) - finishing a ton of details like some tiling in the volunteers' apartment, some corners that still need painting, some wooden gates that were a bit clunky, repainting outdoor floors, fixing fences, reorgansing the shelter room and finding better ways to keep it clean and tidy, sorting out our storage area, creating better ventilation in isoaltion areas...and cleaning... always cleaning! - finishing the studio apartment on the ground floor (and finding a new team member to come live with us and the dogs!) - finishing a wall to separate dogs with behavioral challenges in a shaded, comfortable area - setting up the entrance to the shelter BUT.... while all of this is happening, something else happened that we are SO EXCITED to tell you about! Isla Animals Oasis is EXPANDING!!!!!! It's always been a long-term dream, the real possibility of growing, as there are many vacant lots around us here... and unexpectedly and out of the blue, we managed to secure the lot next door!!!! 20x20m of jungle that thanks to a private donation now belongs to Isla Animals (the price was definitely something we could not let pass!). Yes, the land is secured, however, all the fees related to putting it in our name and titles and all that is actually more than the price of the land! Not to mention that hardcore building is something we weren't planning to get back to for at least 5 years! The current costs we are trying to raise money are these: - Legal fees (around 60.000 mxp for starters and probably another 50.000 mxp later) - Building a perimetral wall on the 20m on the street to avoid neighbors dumping trash (we will eventually wall the whole property for the dog's safety - this first wall is about 70.000 mxp) Just these first steps sum up to almost 10.000 usd! So... WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO in this land? This is going to be a slow project, we are going to deal with it not with the crazy rush we had to build Oasis... and.... this space si going to be a SANCTUARY!!!! We often joke we are a rescue not a sanctuary... because the spaces we have created in the shelter are for dogs to come, heal and wait till they find a home... a few months at most... dogs spending a lot more time here... which happens, may find it tiring, with new dogs coming in all the time, puppies barking, and limited spaces... so this new area is going to be their free paradise.... we are still going to be looking for homes for them, but in the meanwhile they will have space to run, shade to rest... a little jungle sanctuary for those doggies that for differernt reasons may need to spend more time here... safe... and loved! THANK YOU for believing in our mission, in what we could build out here and we hope you're proud of being part of the Isla Animals family! Your support means the world to the hundreds of animals we get to help thanks to having our Oasis... We are committed to the animals that need it the most. We are here for the long run!
